Hello 2024 | Geek Life Lately 47

Happy New Year and hello 2024! Welcome to the very first Geek Life Lately of the year.   I hope you’ve had a fantastic start to the year so far.

I have started to put these monthly posts out earlier on in the month and adding to them. So this is kind of like a living and breathing post as the month progresses. February Geek Life Lately will probably be similar, this way I still have time to do my Grateful Bytes posts.

Let’s start with the big news first – I have quit social media! I’ll likely make a follow up video and post to this so let me know if you have any questions.

Magical Sunset Day 13 Fitness Gaming Challenge

Because I’m no longer on social media, I’m aiming for better blogging habits (aka not forgetting for months about the post) lol and focusing more on YouTube.

Aside from quitting social media and as far as resolutions go, all I want this year is good health (for me and my family) I’ll be getting into my 2024 goals in another post plus sharing my word and phrase of the year.

I’m currently working on several blog posts (when aren’t I?)  Cuteek Wrapped 2023 is out now!  Just a bit behind you know how it is these first weeks of the year.

Here in Spain the Christmas holidays aren’t over until after 3 Kings Day on 6th January. This is the day we exchange our Christmas gifts (the day Jesus gets his presents from the 3 Wise Men)  I received some lovely things including a new pen which I’m using for my daily Stoic gratitude journal, new Snoopy pjs and money which I bought some clothes with.

cozy Lifestyle & Minimalism

As you know this a geek lifestyle blog but I’m also a minimalist who enjoys cozy gaming, especially since 2023 whooped my ass health wise. Simplifying my home and removing stress is very important to me and I do love that hygge feeling of curling up with my laptop, Nintendo Switch or PS5 from the sofa.

Plans for week 1 of January included decluttering and sorting through our home office but I caught the lurgy virus over Christmas. Getting sick didn’t stop me but I’m also not trying to be superwoman.

I grabbed a bunch of paper clutter and retreated to my sofa burrito and slowly went through it. I did this while I watched Robyn’s Minimalist Home Workshop and there was an empowerment meditation part. I cried so much during this but it was necessary.  Still not feeling 100% but I’ve been chipping away at our home office slowly, making sure to recycle or donate something everyday.

  • The Grinch: Christmas Adventures – this game is very underrated and I’ve rage quit it several times. 🤣
  • Not me completely forgetting about Christmas and NY on my Animal Crossing island again 🏝️ See this is why it’s a great idea to have a Nightmare Before Christmas style holiday island.  I already have a year round Halloweentown so why not? Lol Maybe a fun project for YouTube.
  • I think I need to play Baldur’s Gate because there’s a cute dog called Biscotti who wears a lil bow in his hair.
  • I played PowerWash Simulator at the end of December but it was the day I started getting sick so I think I need to give it another chance.
  • There are sooooo many video games I want to play and I’m very lucky to be in a position to have games sent to me to check out. This is the reason I started a First Impressions gaming series rather than full on reviews. So stay tuned for more of them on YouTube and the blog.

Study wise I’m dedicated to Duolingo Spanish. I’ve been sharing a lot more of this on YouTube, especially since some features aren’t available to all users yet. It’s my favourite way to learn a language and another thing I include in my Ikigai of things that matter to me and the lovely community. Once I’ve finished spinning some plates I’ll pick up some of the digital marketing courses I’d like to complete or certificates that I need to renew.

DuoRadio a new feature from Duolingo

  • Doctor Who (Prime) Binge watched season 1 & 2 while I’ve been sick. 10 and Rose are my favourites 💔
  • A Christmas Together with You (Prime) Exactly the festive cheese that I needed
  • Diane in Denmark (YouTube) One of my fave YouTubers who share hygge lifestyle and minimalism videos
  • Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Disney+) Fantastic! Harrison Ford still has it
  • The Productivityist Refine Workshop (YouTube) Mike Vardy never fails to get me motivated
  • Minimalist Home (YouTube) Robyn’s recent live was a game changer for me
  • ThunderFox Gaming (YouTube) Fellow Outright Games Ambassador Nick plays games like Minecraft, Roblox and Splatoon. I like watching his streams and content when I’m on chill out mode.
  • Interior Design Masters (Netflix) this is a nice easy watch in between shows.
  • On The Line: The Richard Williams Story (Movistar) This was SO interesting about tennis stars Serena, Venus and their father/coach Richard Williams. I didn’t know anything about their story until watching this.
  • Spirited Away – introduced my mum to her first Studio Ghibli film. She really enjoyed the art and story, we’ve since moved onto Howl’s Moving Castle which I’ve seen once before and so fond of.
  • Seth MacFarlane & Liz Gillies on Zach Sang Show podcast – they were promoting an album and the new TED series, it’s just such a funny podcast like friends chatting.
  • Star Wars: A New Hope – I could watch this over and over. The soundtrack is chef’s kiss and definitely gets me in the mood to watch E play Battlefront 2015.

I finally synced my iPad up with my new iPhone 15 so my books should pop up on my phone now.  Here’s hoping those moments otherwise spent scrolling endlessly on my phone when ‘bored’ will turn into reading a few pages.  It all adds up I guess. I do much prefer being cozy reading in bed on my iPad but let’s see if this works.

Speaking of books, I’ve set myself a 2024 Reading Challenge of 10 books.  That feels about right for me.

Did you set a reading challenge for this year?

How many times have I said that I want to spend more time reading my favourite blogs?  My Feedly really needs a refresh, another thing to add to the list.  I do wish it were easier to comment on blogs from mobile without logging into different services.

Books In progress

  • Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Hector Garcia Puigcerver and Francesc Miralles
  • The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday – this is back in rotation and this year I’m highlighting stuff with a pen!
  • The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson – my 2024 vibes
